5 Jersey anglers represented the Channel Islands at the UK Sensas challenge Final held on the Gloucester Canal. This competition is one of the biggest team events in the Uk with the international teams from Ireland, Wales , Scotland and two teams from France sent by the sponsor Sensas, one of the teams sensas 28 are currently the French national champions. Also attending are the top 24 teams in the uk making up 30 teams for the final. This event is fished over two days with the best scores over the two days combined deciding the winners.
The team comprised of Greig Brown, Mel Hales, Carl Waye Dean Stone and Shaun Rankin left last wed evening on the overnight ferry. We arrived at the venue on the Thursday lunchtime to watch a few of the team practising and also sort out our bait and hotel for the weekend. We practised on one of the sections on Friday only to be told as we were setting up that the team that fished there the day before had failed to catch a fish. In The end the practise went reasonably well with Greig catching 34 roach and 3 bream, shaun managed 2 bream and carl managed 1 bream and a large roach. Deano and Mel were trying a different method to see if it worked , unfortunately they failed to catch so we managed to rule this out very quickly. We learnt a lot from this practice session and working well as a team we had sorted out 3 different methods for catching fish on a difficult venue.
On the first match day the team put in a reasonable performance finishing in 23rd place , with Mel Hales being the top performer with a 3rd in Section , Shaun was 9th carl 12th Dean and Greig finishing in 14th place. On the 2nd day the team put in a great performance finishing in 8th position with Dean winning his section with 7kilo and 70gr of bream. Carl finishing 2nd in his section with 6kilo 380gr of bream. Greig 7th in his section Shaun 8th in his and Mel 12th. This was a great performance by all the team but an absolutely fantastic performance from Dean , Carl and Mel against a top class field ( Deano finished 2nd and Carl 4th overall on the Sunday out of 150 anglers). The team finished in a creditable 16th place overall against a very strong field. We used this as a practice for the World Championships in Bulgaria later in the year. Hopefully this is the start of a good year for the Channel Islands.
